Eco activities week

Latymer Upper School enjoyed five days of eco activities last week, designed to highlight the challenges facing the environment. Pupils across the School rolled up their sleeves and participated in events that included the following:

  • During break time on Monday and Friday the Piazza was abuzz with activities provided to the School by Thames Water. Games such as Giant Snakes and Ladders, Twister, Top trumps and Higher/Lower were all based of water usage and full of interesting facts.
  • Meat free Monday – the whole school enjoyed a vegetarian menu at lunch. Two sixth formers gave a fascinating talk to the Eco Society and then to Year 9/10 assembly on the impact of animals on the environment.
  • Year 8 pupils were treated to an assembly on Tuesday by 8T on the UN’s 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development – a topic they will all be studying in more detail next year.
  • During lunch break a weigh-in of food not eaten by students highlighted the amount of food that is being wasted every day by the school community. Meanwhile, Junior Debating discussed the topic of animal testing.
  • Origami Club was a hive of activity on Wednesday. Pupils used recycled paper from around the school for their creations – we look forward to seeing them displayed around the School soon. In an Up-Cycling Workshop Year 8 students bought along old clothes from which to make something new. Projects included a wonderful variety of constructions; socks to gloves, pockets to a phone case, jeans to dungaree shorts and a jumper and jeans to oven gloves.
  • On Thursday Chris Dodwell, Director of Climate Change and Sustainability at Ricardo Energy & Environment joined the JS Mills Society to discuss his work implementing the Paris Climate Agreement. We finished a hectic week on Friday with eco games in the Piazza and Nick Kolobov’s talk to the Eco Society on Eco Terrorists!
