Sport at Latymer

Home > Co-curricular > Sport

We take sport seriously at Latymer Upper School. It plays a major part in both the curricular and co-curricular life of our students, who enjoy both team sports and individual pursuits.  We’re proud of our history and tradition of sporting provision for pupils of all abilities, from beginners to elite athletes.

Opportunity and variety

As in all subjects at Latymer, in Sport we offer opportunity, quality, variety  and breadth. Our aim is to give all pupils the chance to take part in curriculum lessons and co-curricular sport and to provide an environment that allows every student to achieve their potential.

Fitness and sport are central to a healthy lifestyle and children concentrate and learn better if they are also busy on our school playing fields, Astro Turf pitches, netball courts or river – or simply burning energy in the playgrounds at break time.

There are three strands to Latymer’s Sports department:

  • Curriculum physical education and games lessons
  • Academic lessons (currently A Level PE)
  • Extensive co-curricular sports programme

Curriculum and co-curricular sport

The major sports offered at Latymer are rugby, football and rowing for the boys and hockey, netball, rounders and rowing for the girls, with cricket offered to both. Latymer regularly fields A-D teams and fixtures are played both at weekends and after school on weekdays. Students are expected to represent the School in such fixtures.

Co-curricular sport is very popular at Latymer and highly valued by both staff and students. The Sports department runs an extensive programme of recreational clubs which include competitive fixture lists. In addition to the major sports we are also very competitive at swimming and athletics and offer further opportunities in a variety of sports such as badminton, basketball, girls’ football, fencing, squash, table tennis and many others.

Excellence in sport

For those who take sport to a higher level and are selected for the sports squads, first-class training and support will enable them to achieve their full potential. Every year Latymer students are represented in county and national squads and many individual pupils have achieved full international honours. Both now and in the recent past pupils have been part of such teams as the England Rugby U18, Ireland Rugby U18, GB Rowing J18 & J16 (boys and girls), South of England Girls’ Hockey U18, Middlesex Cricket U16, Middlesex Women’s Cricket U15 and the Independent Schools’ Football squad.

Facilities

Games afternoons, matches and training generally take place at our playing fields in Wood Lane to which pupils are transported by coach. Wood Lane offers outstanding facilities including 4 rugby/football pitches, 3 cricket squares, a floodlit Astro Turf pitch for hockey, netball, football and tennis and a modern pavilion and changing rooms. It is testament to the quality of the site that the All Blacks, Wallabies, Springboks and Lions rugby teams regularly use Wood Lane for training when in the UK.

On the King Street site we have two floodlit netball courts and a recently opened, state-of-the-art sports centre that contains a 6 lane, 25m swimming pool with an adjustable floor, used for water polo as well as regular swimming lessons, a large sports hall, fitness suite, three studios, a climbing wall and plenty of changing rooms. Latymer overlooks the Thames and our onsite boathouse houses over 30 boats.

We’re always pleased to welcome parents, many of whom come every week to support the school teams at Wood Lane, on the river or at away fixtures. Teams travel throughout London and the surrounding area for fixtures and the major sports teams tour regularly to destinations such as Sri Lanka, Dubai, Holland, Trinidad & Tobago, Canada, Kenya, South Africa and the US.
