Our Lower Sixth geographers had a brilliant few days away developing their fieldwork skills in Glastonbury. Students spent the Wednesday evening settling into their lovely mock Swiss chalet in Street before heading into Glastonbury on the Thursday. Here, students developed the fieldwork planning skills that they will be utilising in their NEAs, with our geographers really demonstrating some highly innovative and detailed questioning of investigating sense of place in an environment that was new to all of them. After a busy day of data collection, students enjoyed pizza before burning off all the calories climbing Glastonbury Tor to watch the beautiful sunset. It was an earlier start on the Friday to head to Cheddar Gorge and Caves to explore this limestone gorge and incredibly interesting cave system. Students were blown away by the age of many of the cave features, including a stalagmite that was over 250,000 years old! After the tour, they departed for Savernake Forest – a beautiful ancient woodland near Marlborough. Here they investigated the carbon content of trees and did some complex maths to work out the total amount of carbon stored in the forest.
‘Well done to all of our geographers for a great few days – I know Miss Owens, Mr McCafferty and myself had a lovely time away.’ – Mr Shackleton, Head of Geography
