Olympiad Successes 2023

School Vice Captain, Daniel,  has made it to the top 100 entrants in the 2023 British Physics Olympiad (BPhO). Record numbers participated in this highly competitive event, with over 6,000 students from 440 schools around the world entering the first round.

Having achieved a ‘Top Gold’ in round one he qualified for the second round in which he then achieved a Silver award. Daniel’s peers, Andrea, Balthazar, Elena and Nikhil achieved the Bronze award; there were a further 8 Silver awards for Alexander, Charlie, Hugh, Matilda, Nathan, Oscar, Pluto and Saskia, and Gold for Edward.

Daniel’s success reflects an extraordinary year for Latymer Upper School students. In the British Mathematical Olympiad, Sofia, Quyll and Yazhou each earnt distinctions, which puts them among the top 200-300 young mathematicians in the country. Quyll did exceptionally well, being in the top 100 performers and qualifying for the follow-up round (BMO2).

The School enjoyed its best ever results in the Chemistry Olympiad 2023, with all 28 students who entered, achieving golds, silver or bronze awards. Quyll, Kim, Matilda, Sofia and Cleo came in the top 9% of the 11,800+ people in the competition, to take gold; Daniel, Pravin, Jody, Ishaan, Max, Peter, Tej, Arez and Danae all came in the top 33% to take Silver. Zaal, Chase, Charlotte, Arielle, Marianna, Leo, Lorenzo, Claire, Justine, Dane, Philip, Nisan, Isobel, Lily achieving Bronze.

At this year’s British Biology Olympiad our Sixth Formers achieved outstanding results, with 7 Gold, 7 Silvers, 7 Bronze, 6 Highly Commended and 5 Commended. Mathilda has been selected to attend the UK team selection event at Warwick University in April. It is a fantastic enrichment opportunity and if successful, she could go on to represent the UK at the highly prestigious International Biology Olympiad which will be held in Dubai in July.

In the UK Linguistics Olympiad all seven students from Latymer who competed won a bronze award or higher with one student, Amitai, even achieving a high gold!

It isn’t all Olympiads success, in the Hans Woyda Mathematics Competition, the School’s team – Tianyou, Robyn, Quyll and Sofia – also reached the semi finals after beating teams from St Paul’s Girls’ School; St Paul’s Boys’ School; Godolphin and Latymer, Haberdashers’ Boys’ School and Highgate before losing by the narrowest of margins to Harrow.
