WAYS OF GIVING

Ways of Giving to Latymer Upper School And Tax Efficiency

Latymer Upper School encourages those who are able to support the School with gifts of their time, involvement and money. Each of these kinds of support does much to keep Latymer a strong and healthy school for today and in the future.

Should you be interested in making a financial gift to the School, the following information may prove helpful. If you have questions, please contact the Development Office at 0845 638 5965.

Gift Aid - Gift Aid was introduced by the UK government in April 2000 as a way of encouraging giving. One-off gifts both large and small as well as multiple gifts qualify for Gift Aid. The methods for accessing Gift Aid are remarkably simple.

If you are a UK taxpayer Latymer can reclaim £28 pounds for every £100 you contribute. Your £100 thus becomes in actuality a gift of £128! We send the details of your gift to the Inland Revenue and they return to us the tax that you paid when you earned the money to make your gift. Higher rate taxpayers can themselves reclaim £23 of every £100 gifted. These examples assume a 22% basic tax rate and a higher rate of 40%.

For Example:

ContributionActual "Cost" to Donor Value to Latymer Upper School
£100£88 £128
£1000 £880£1280
£10,000 £8,800 £12,800

Gift Aid may be simply declared by completing a Latymer Upper School standard gift form or by making a verbal declaration to a member of the LUS Development Office staff. See attached.

Cheque - Please make cheques payable to Latymer Foundation at Hammersmith and deliver or post to the Latymer Upper School Development Office. Gifts by cheque are eligible for Gift Aid.

Banker's Order for Multiple Gifts - You may prefer the convenience of electronic fund transfers for regular giving to Latymer School. Please complete the attached form and post it to Latymer Upper School Development Office. One completed Gift Aid form will include all gifts made through a Banker's Order.

Credit and Debit Cards - The Development Office now accepts donations via credit or debit cards (0845 638 5970)

Gifts of Shares - As of April 2000, offering shares to a registered charity, like Latymer Upper School, may offer significant tax incentives to the donor. These incentives include both income relief as well as capital gains tax savings. LUS Development Office staff can offer general insight into the advantages of this but we encourage you to speak to your own financial advisor as well.

To give stock certificates - Deliver coupons to Latymer Upper School Development Office and complete appropriate paperwork to transfer ownership of said stock.

For electronic transfer of shares - Contact your broker - by phone or post --telling him or her the name of the stock you are giving, the amount in £ of the gift, when you wish to make the gift and the name and telephone of Latymer Upper School's Director of Development. Your broker should then telephone or write to Latymer with the information. Jennifer Casey is Latymer's Director of Development. Her telephone number is 0845 638 5965.

Legacies - The power of legacy gifts can last for generations as witnessed by the 1624 legacy to educate "poore boys of Hammersmith" by Edward Latymer. Making provision for Latymer Upper School in your will allows you to minimise your exposure to Inheritance tax (40% as of 2004), helping Latymer to honour the past as well as move forward. Gifts of money, personal possessions such as shares, other securities, land and buildings, jewellery, antiques, and works of art will all be appreciated. If considering a legacy gift, please contact the Director of Development as well as your own solicitor.

Gifts from Overseas and/or the Expatriate Community - Gifts from friends of the Latymer Upper School who are living in the US or US citizens living in the UK who wish to give their gift in dollars will benefit from the US income tax deduction. Gifts may be made by contacting the British School and Universities Foundation, Inc. Their web site is www.bsuf.org. Please contact the Latymer Development Office for more information.
