LIFE AT LATYMER

ACADEMIC LIFE

SIXTH FORM

With approximately 350 students, Latymer's Sixth Form is one of the largest in London.  As well as the opportunity of the highest academic achievement, the Sixth Form offers its students intellectual stimulus and unparalleled opportunities for personal growth and development.  Latymer's Sixth Form is lively, purposeful and friendly with strong relations between students and teachers.  The student is valued as an individual, and our Sixth Formers are given increased freedom and independence within a supportive and structured environment.  The Latymer Sixth Form is an excellent preparation for the greater freedoms at university and in the adult world.

The choice of subjects in the Sixth Form is very wide, embracing all the core subjects along with new subjects such as the Extended Project, History of Art, Politics, Philosophy, Greek, Economics, Classical Civilisation, Photography,  Computing and Critical Thinking.  The timetable is built around the students' options to facilitate choice and diversity.

Students are expected to choose up to four subjects to study to Advanced Level from an unusually wide-ranging list; some students opt for five.  As one of their choices, all students have the opportunity to do an Extended Project on a topic of their own choosing.  Classes and tutorial groups are small - typically no more than twelve in a set.  All written exams are taken at the end of the Upper Sixth; this effectively means our students have five terms of teaching uninterrupted by public examinations.

In addition to formal teaching, there is a wide programme of visiting speakers, academic societies and trips.  As well as a regular Games afternoon, Sixth Form students are encouraged to take part in all the extra curricular opportunities on offer and all have the chance to do community service.  When not in lessons, students can continue their work in the Library or, now and then, relax in the Sixth Form Common Room.

We expect all our Sixth Form students to act as role models.  There are numerous opportunities for leadership and responsibility.  One obvious opportunity is offered through the Prefect system, with those students selected as Prefects playing a significant role at public events as well as supervising younger pupils.
