Pastoral life - Whole School
'The school provides outstanding pastoral support for its pupils... Pupils feel valued, listened to and cared for and they develop as confident, happy individuals, proud of their achievement'.
HMI Inspection Report
We are, indeed, a happy School where the well-being of our pupils is central to all that we aim to achieve, both in and out of the classroom. In all this, our priority is to get to know pupils as individuals so that they can prosper and develop. It is a philosophy which has at its heart a belief that schools should help their pupils become well-rounded young people, comfortable in themselves and in the company of others, whatever their differences. There are no typical Latymer pupils but we do encourage values such as politeness and helpfulness in all. Our pupils have a genuine sense of social responsibility. They realise that studying at Latymer is a privilege, and with that privilege comes responsibility. Our pupils are more than up to this challenge. We see them happily reaching out the community, helping at local schools and inviting our neighbours into the School for things like our pensioners' Christmas Party.
From the Head down all of the teaching staff, and many of the pupils, are actively engaged in making our pastoral care the very best. Form Tutors are at the centre of this pastoral hub. They are key in ensuring the well-being and progress of our pupils, liaising with Heads of Year, parents and other staff when necessary. Each Head of Year works closely with the Assistant Head of their section and the Head who has overall responsibility for pastoral care. Sixth Form prefects play a key role in supporting the work of the pastoral team both formally and informally. There is also an effective 'Peer mentor' system where the more senior pupils provide advice and a listening ear for our younger pupils. The work of the pastoral team is also supported by the school nurse and a clinical psychologist who offers counselling.
In our last School Inspection the quality of the relationships between pupils and staff, here at Latymer, was highlighted as outstanding. We are a warm and friendly school where achievement is celebrated and enjoyed but we also celebrate personal qualities such as kindness, resilience and empathy. In all this our aim is to support our pupils to be the best they can be in all that they do.
