The Art school is at the very heart of Latymer in every sense - the three storey Gallery and expansive double height studio within the Latymer Arts Centre, linked to four further studios filling two floors above the Dining Hall and the connecting bridge spanning the Sculpture Court.
The extensive and expansive facilities allow for the full creative flowering of a most ambitious and creative mix of pupils, much of whose art draws from the urban environment about them, from their peers and their families. Their Art is about Modern Life, and their passion for it, though at its core both a respect for and an exploitation of traditional making skills is clearly reflected in much of the practice. So three metre abstract canvasses might be balanced by delicate and sustained figure studies, executed during one of the life classes, held three times each week, after school. Contemporary art practice and fresh graphic imagery helps to inform pupils' work. Photography is offered as a separate A Level with an annual exhibition where coursework is displayed. New digital technologies are well catered for, alongside extensive sculpture, print-making and painting facilities. Our proximity to London galleries and museums, both ancient and national, and cutting edge and commercial, ensures an up-to-date understanding of visual trends and all is supported by informed, excited and working art teachers. And if the collections of London are not enough, each year between 30 and 40 sixth form artists enjoy trips, either to Venice and Florence or New York.
Latymer artists are energetic and committed, and all this is reflected in three annual exhibitions in the gallery and in the Summer Show, probably the largest school art exhibition in the country. And of course it is reflected in results too, and in the career ambitions of many of our leavers, around of dozen of whom each year progress to Art Schools or to read Architecture. Several others go on to study History of Art.
