OUR PUPILS

ARE COMPETITIVE

Sport at Latymer is very participative and highly successful. We offer a wide variety of opportunities at all levels: from first team excellence to recreational clubs. The Physical Education Department offers a dedicated programme of PE which boys and girls can look forward to and enjoy. Our programme promotes a positive attitude towards active, healthy living and high participation levels are the norm. The PE staff have all played at county or international level in their respective sports and are therefore in a strong position to foster the ambitions of those with the ability to compete at the highest level.

Extra-curricular sport is very popular at Latymer and highly valued by both staff and pupils. The Physical Education Department offers a huge range of activities and an extensive competitive fixture list. Boys and girls are encouraged to join and, with the exception of rugby, hockey and netball, all the clubs are open to both boys and girls. It is our belief that we provide a sufficiently wide choice of activity to give everyone the chance to be involved if they wish.

Rugby Club:  At senior level there is a 1st XV, a Development team and an Under 16 team, which are entered into the Daily Mail Cup, Middlesex Cup, Sevens touring competitions, and local fixtures. We also take the opportunity to play and host touring sides from around the world. We enter Middlesex competitions at U13 to U16 age groups. The Senior Squad toured Argentina in August 2004, and Australia in summer 2007.

Football Club: We have teams ranging in age from U12 to U19. At ages U12-U14 we field six teams in each age group. We organise an extensive and competitive fixtures list for which we train once a week and play twice a week. We have senior and junior girls football teams which train once a week and have their own fixtures list.

The captain of the U16 Independent Schools' Football Association team (ISFA) is a Latymer pupil and our 1st XI are currently the London Independent Schools Champions. The Senior Squad toured South Africa in July 2004, and Los Angeles in July 2006.

Netball Club: Our girls show great enthusiasm for netball and a very high proportion attend netball club so that we field four U12 netball teams. We also field two enthusiastic U18 netball teams drawn from the Sixth Form and the 1st U18 team won this year's Middlesex U18 Championships. The Senior Netball Squad toured Dublin in April 2005 and Malta in April 2006. All team members train three times per week and have a busy fixtures schedule. There are also plenty of opportunities for recreational netball.

Cricket Club: In terms of silverware, cricket is certainly one of the stronger sports at Latymer. The fixture list includes high quality opposition such as the London schools: Kingston Grammar, Mill Hill, Hampton and Merchant Taylor's. In addition, many of our boys participate in the Lords winter cricket nets, represent both London Schools and Middlesex, and play for local clubs such as Acton and Ealing CC.

The PE and Games Department has established an advanced winter cricket academy and both our junior and senior teams have recently toured the South East of England and Sri Lanka. All teams train throughout the season in the School's sports hall nets and at Wood Lane. Our Under 15s have represented Inner London in the prestigious National Competition for the past three seasons and Latymer Upper has been the winner of the U14 Taverners' Trophy for the past three years. We have also won the CJ Green Cup and been runners up in both the Under 12 Gifford and ESCA Trophies.

Boat Club:  The Latymer Upper School Boat Club offers first-class equipment and coaching to both boys and girls who wish to take part in and excel at rowing. There is a team of dedicated coaches, themselves rowers of international standing. More than 160 boys and girls train at the club and many of them race regularly throughout the year. The club houses around 30 boats, including a world-class eight and quad sculls for use at the country's top  regattas.  Nine Latymer rowers have been selected for the British Junior Team - three girls and six boys.  Our club results place us in the top ten in the country and we race each year at Henley. One of our lower sixth boys won a gold medal in the coxless fours of the World Junior Rowing Championships held in Beijing in August 2007.

Cross Country Running: The Cross Country Running Club is open to all ages and meets every week. Pupils regularly compete in divisional, regional and national competitions.

Basketball Club: Basketball at LUS started in earnest in 2004. In their first season, the U18 team played 25 games and won 14: a tremendous start to the programme! For the 2005-2006 season, two additional teams were formed - the Under 13 and Under 15 boys' teams - with a view to setting the foundations for a successful basketball future at Latymer Upper.

Tennis: Tennis is available to all age groups during the summer. There are squads for each age group that play in the Tennis Association London League and we recently reached the semi-finals of the  Independent Schools' Championship. Students are coached by ‘Will-to-Win' in Chiswick.
