Foundation Scholarships (means-tested)
Foundation (i.e. means tested) Scholarships are awarded at 11+ and 16+ by Latymer Upper School on the twin basis of academic merit and family financial circumstances. Foundation Scholarships can vary in amount from 15% up to 100% fee remission. Parents who consider themselves eligible for a Foundation Scholarship should indicate this clearly on the application form. It is very important that parents indicate whether they also want to be considered for a fee paying place if the application for a Foundation Scholarship is unsuccessful.
To qualify for consideration for a Foundation Scholarship, the applicant must perform very well in the examinations at 11+ or be invited to interview at 16+. Financial circumstances are not considered until after the entrance examinations at 11+ or interview at 16+. There is strong competition for Foundation Scholarships and not all those who apply will receive awards. If you have indicated that you do not wish to be considered for a fee paying place and, after exams or interview your child is not being considered for a Foundation Scholarship, your application will not be taken further.
Those applying for Foundation Scholarships will be sent a Confidential Statement of Financial Circumstances Form, which should be completed and returned by the date indicated on the form. This information allows the Finance Director to determine the level of financial assistance that may be offered. This information will not be considered until examinations or interview have taken place. For those candidates who are being considered, the Finance Director will make contact with the family to discuss the application further and to assess what level of financial assistance, if any, might be available. Each candidate will be assessed individually. Should the candidate be eligible for full [i.e. 100%] fee assistance, a home visit will normally be conducted.
All means tested awards are given at the discretion of the Head. Means tested awards are subject to annual review, both in terms of academic performance and financial need.
The following means tested awards have been generously endowed by former pupils and friends of the School:
The Fynvola Grant Scholarship The Fynvola Grant Scholarship is awarded each year, up to the value of full fees. The award is funded by Hugh Grant, a Latymerian from 1969 to 1978. The Scholarship is endowed in memory of his mother, Fynvola, who was a much respected teacher in the state system in West London for three decades.
The Sloane Robinson Scholarship The Sloane Robinson Foundation funds two awards each year to the value of half fees. Hugh Sloane was a Latymerian from 1967 to 1974. The School normally provides the other half of the fee and awards these Scholarships to pupils who qualify for full fee remission.
The Colin Turner Scholarship The Colin Turner Charitable Trust funds an award each year, up to the value of full fees. The donor is Mel Smith who attended Latymer from 1964 to 1971. This award is given in memory of Colin Turner who taught Drama and English at Latymer from 1957 to 1990 and was Mel Smith's Drama Teacher.
The Stephen Hodges Scholarship The Stephen Hodges Scholarship funds an award for one pupil throughout their time at the school, to the value of half fees. The School normally provides the other half of the fee and awards this Scholarship to a pupil qualifying for full fee remission. Stephen Hodges was a Latymerian from 1965 to 1972 and is a current Governor of the School.
The Chris Hammond Scholarship The Chris Hammond Scholarship funds an award for one pupil throughout their time at the school, to the value of half fees. The School normally provides the other half of the fee and awards this Scholarship to a pupil qualifying for full fee remission. Chris Hammond taught Chemistry at Latymer from 1966 to 2007 and was Assistant Head with particular responsibility for community links. This award is funded by a gift from an anonymous donor, generously supplemented with contributions from the Latymer community in recognition of Chris's many years of distinguished service to pupils and teachers.
The Martin Myers Scholarship The Martin Myers Scholarship funds an award for one pupil throughout their time at the school, to the value of half fees. Martin Myers was a Latymerian from 1953 to 1960.
The Albert Pryce Scholarship The Albert Pryce Scholarship funds an award of 40% of fees for one pupil throughout their time at the school. Albert Pryce was a free place pupil at Latymer from 1941 to 1946 who wanted to repay the School for the start it gave him in life. Albert Pryce died in 2006 and this award was endowed by his legacy.
Edward Latymer Scholarships Edward Latymer Scholarships are awarded to able students entering at 11+. These Scholarships are funded from Latymer's Scholarship Endowment Fund, which has built on the original educational endowment established in 1624 by the School's founder, Edward Latymer. Generous contributions from parents, former parents, staff, former pupils and friends of the School allow the Fund to offer these opportunities.
Annual Fund Scholarships It is the School's intention every year to offer at least two Annual Fund Scholarships to able students entering at 11+. These Scholarships are funded by the generosity of the whole Latymer community of present parents, former parents, former pupils, staff and friends of the School.
We continue to offer the education envisaged by our founder, Edward Latymer, who wanted to provide educational opportunity to 'eight poore boyes of Hammersmith'. We now, of course, extend this to girls as well. Fundraising for means tested Scholarships is the primary charitable focus of the Latymer Foundation at Hammersmith. We continue to build the Endowment Fund to offer means tested Scholarships to increased numbers of boys and girls who, though academically able enough to win a place at Latymer, may, because of family circumstances, be unable to afford the fees. Our aim is to create a permanent fund that will meet and indeed surpass our target of achieving eight students in each year group (a total of 56 across the School) in receipt of 100% full fee Scholarships for each of their seven years at Latymer, honouring Edward Latymer's original promise, made nearly 400 years ago, of educating local children as our central philanthropic aim.
