SCHOLARSHIPS

Means tested Scholarships

Latymer Upper School was created by an act of extraordinary philanthropy.  In 1624, Edward Latymer, a wealthy lawyer and man of property, bequeathed part of his wealth for the clothing and education of "eight poore boyes" from Hammersmith.  In keeping with the vision of its founder, Latymer aims to continue to offer such opportunities to West London children, now girls as well as boys and especially those from the local area, by offering a number of means tested scholarships every year, based on the twin criteria of academic merit and family financial circumstances.

Means tested Scholarships can vary in amount from 15% up to 100% fee remission.  Parents who consider themselves eligible for a Means tested Scholarship should indicate this clearly on the application form.

To qualify for consideration for a means tested Scholarship, the applicant must perform very well in the examinations at 11+  or be invited to interview at 16+.  Financial circumstances are not considered until after the entrance examinations at 11+ or interview at 16+.  There is strong competition for means tested Scholarships and not all those who apply will receive awards because funds are limited.

Those applying for means tested Scholarships will be sent a Confidential Statement of Financial Circumstances Form, which should be completed and returned by the date indicated on the form.  This information allows the School to determine the level of financial assistance that may be offered.  This information will not be considered until examinations or interview have taken place.  For those candidates who are being considered, the Finance Director will make contact with the family to discuss the application further and to assess what level of financial assistance, if any, might be required, before recommendations are submitted to the Head.  Should the candidate be eligible for full (ie 100%) fee assistance, a home visit will normally be conducted by members of the School's Senior Management Team.

All means tested Scholarships are given at the absolute discretion of the Head.  Means tested scholarships are subject to annual review, both in terms of academic performance and financial need.

There are a number of specific means tested Scholarships available at 11+ entry, awarded by individual donors and ranging from 50% to 100% of fees.  At Sixth Form, as well as a number of individually sponsored awards, there is a specific Scholarship, co-sponsored by the Ogden Trust for a candidate who wishes to study Physics at A Level, has come from a school in the maintained sector, and who wishes to continue the study of Physics or a Physics related degree at university.

Every year the School awards at least two Annual Fund Scholarships.  These Scholarships are funded by the generosity of the whole Latymer community of current parents, former parents, former pupils, staff and friends of the School.

There are additional means tested Scholarships at both 11+ and 16+ funded by the Latymer Foundation itself.

SCHOLARSHIPS AT 11+ (Non means-tested)

ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS  Academic Scholarships are offered at 11+.  These consist of a one-off payment of £1000 at time of entry.  At the Head's discretion, a larger financial element may be awarded.

Academic Scholarships for entry at 11+ are awarded on the basis of performance in the entrance examination and at interview.  No separate application is required for a Scholarship and there is no separate Scholarship examination or interview.

MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPS

Candidates for Music Scholarships must first meet the academic requirements for entry to the School.

MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPS  Music Scholarships are awarded strictly on ability and potential as tested at audition by the Director of Music.  A number of Music Scholarships, including free tuition on two instruments, are available for entry at 11+. The major Scholarship, the Walter Legge Music Scholarship, is offered each year to a talented 11+ candidate for the study of music at Latymer Upper School.  The Scholarship, which is not means tested and offers a 40% reduction in fees, is funded by an anonymous donor and is named after one of Latymer's most distinguished musical alumni.  (Walter Legge was a student at Latymer from 1916-1925.  He went on to become one of the classical music world's most distinguished producers of classical music recordings, discovering among others Karajan, Klemperer, Callas and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf.)  Tenure of a Music Scholarship is reviewed annually and is subject to the holder's continued progress, involvement in and commitment to music, to the satisfaction of the Director of Music.

The competition for Music Scholarships is intended to discover musical aptitude and promise.  Parents should note that preference will normally be given to instrumentalists rather than keyboard players or composers.  Those candidates not offered Scholarships may sometimes be awarded a Music Award comprising free tuition on 2 musical instruments.  All awards are made on the recommendation of the Director of Music.

For entry at 11+, candidates should be at Grade 5 on their main instrument.

Auditions are held in January, following the entrance examinations, and selected candidates will be advised of the date.  An accompanist will be available at the Scholarship auditions.  Candidates will be required to:

  • Play two prepared pieces (contrasting in character) on their main instrument and, if offered, play one piece on a second instrument (or voice).
  • Read at sight a short piece of    appropriate standard on their main instrument.
  • Respond to aural, theory and general music questions appropriate to their standard.

SCHOLARSHIPS AT 16+ (Non means-tested)

ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS  Academic Scholarships are offered at 16+.  Academic Scholarships for entry at 16+ are awarded following interview.  No separate application is required for a Scholarship to the Sixth Form.  Scholarships are usually renewable for the second year of Sixth Form, subject to satisfactory academic progress and good conduct.

DRAMA Drama Scholarships are offered at 16+.  The major Scholarship, representing 40% of fees, is funded by an anonymous donor and is offered to a Sixth Form candidate who meets Latymer's academic standards and shows exceptional ability and promise in drama.  For all Drama Scholarships, candidates, who will be expected to be studying Drama at AS/A2 Level, and to make a significant contribution to Drama at Latymer, will be asked to attend competitive auditions and be interviewed to discuss their previous theatrical experience and future ambitions.  Auditions will take place in mid to late January. For the auditions, selected candidates are asked to prepare two short pieces, one from Shakespeare and one from any 20th or 21st Century text of their choice.  The pieces should show some contrast in character. Candidates will also take part in an improvisation workshop. Candidates should seek advice from their current drama teacher on preparing for the auditions and workshop.  Performance at audition is the sole criterion for candidates seeking a Drama Scholarship for acting.

Scholarships may also be offered to talented theatre design candidates.  These candidates will be expected to bring a portfolio of their previous work as a set, costume, lighting or sound designer, including any appropriate supporting materials, and will be asked to speak about a recent production to which they feel they contributed significantly.  A separate interview with the Director of Drama will be arranged for design candidates.

Drama Scholarships are usually renewable for the second year of Sixth Form subject to satisfactory academic progress and conduct, and provided the recipient remains actively engaged in drama at Latymer, to the satisfaction of the Director of Drama.

ART Art Scholarships are offered at 16+.  Portfolios are assessed at the time of interview and candidates are advised to ensure that their portfolios are available during the first two weeks in January. Portfolios should reflect the candidate's artistic achievement in school and also more personal work done outside school, and should show evidence of knowledge and understanding of other artists' work.
