FORMING A SYNDICATE OF DONORS

For entry to Latymer at 11+ in September 2010, £107,416 (£83,784 plus Gift Aid) was required to fund a one-off means-tested scholarship for a child at Latymer.

In the summer of 2009, an anonymous donor stepped forward with a remarkable offer. He suggested that he would give us an initial cornerstone gift of £25,000 towards one full seven-year scholarship. He was prepared, moreover, to give us a capstone gift of the final £25,000 if we could leverage his challenge gift by raising the additional £57,416.

We discussed the offer carefully and agreed to a fairly tight deadline of six months. Thanks to a handful of very generous donors, we were able to meet the deadline.

We have since spoken with several other donors who are interested in putting together similar syndicates amongst their family, friends, or year group. Syndicates carry a number of special advantages. They stimulate others to give, and they allow people to share together in the satisfaction of funding a full scholarship.
