Community Links and Partnership Schemes 2007-09
Saturday School
Latymer offers extension learning activities for over one hundred 9 and 10 year old boys and girls who are in state primary schools from neighbouring local authorities although predominately from Hammersmith & Fulham. Lessons are in a range of subjects including practical science and languages. Teaching is by Latymer staff together with 6th formers acting as classroom assistants.
Design Camp
A new initiative in design and technology, currently run jointly with the Royal College of Art. In August 2008, 45 year 8 & 9 children from schools in Hammersmith and Fulham and Kensington and Chelsea led by David Baker (Latymer DT teacher), two RCA graduates, Latymer 6th from pupils and staff from RCA ReachOut undertook a week long design project in architecture and fashion culminating in a show at the end of the week including staff and parents. Initiated by Latymer this project was largely funded by the two boroughs and is likely to expand in 2009.
Chemistry Day
This was a joint venture between UCL, Royal Society of Chemists, LBH&F and Latymer, funded by UCL and RSC. 230 year 9 pupils from local schools including Latymer had a day of hands-on chemistry and lectures by young graduates and eminent chemists from UCL and Imperial. It took place in June 2008.
W12 Cricket
A new project involving thirty 7 - 11 year old boys and girls from local primary schools taking place at Latymer's Wood Lane playing fields. Regular sessions in July and August followed by a match on a Sunday in August gave an opportunity for the pupils to have an experience of cricket with professional coaches not otherwise available at school.
Community Netball
A new project, started in September 2008 taking place at Latymer's Wood Lane playing fields for girls and women in the local borough delivered by professional netball coaches.
Community Service
A number 6th form students help in local primary schools, homes for the disabled and in retirement homes. 200 senior citizens attend the annual Christmas dinner and are hosted by Latymer pupils. Many also come to the annual Carol Service.
Saturday Music School
The London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham's Music Service uses Latymer facilities for individual and ensemble tuition for 7 to 15 year olds every Saturday in term time, also on Monday and Wednesday evenings. Over a hundred young people are involved each week. From time to time a concert is performed. The borough now benefits from using the state of the art facilities in the new Latymer Performing Arts Centre.
Twilight Teaching Sessions
One of the most successful collaborative initiatives and unique to Latymer. Twenty four Gifted and Talented pupils in year 11 from Hurlingham and Chelsea School attend classes given by Latymer staff in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry after school at Latymer in the spring term. This has involved GCSE teaching and practical science lessons and has run for four years. 6th form pupils assistant in these sessions.
Independent State School Partnership (ISSP)
Latymer continues to participate actively in the Independent & State Schools Partnership (ISSP) co-ordinated by the borough in offering expertise, leadership and development for staff and pupils of local schools.
Sport
Three local primary schools use the school's swimming pool every week during term time. A local swimming club also uses the pool two evenings every week. Two local Badminton Clubs uses the Sports Hall every week as does a basketball club.Chiswick & Latymer Cricket Club as well as Middlesex County Cricket Association use the cricket nets all year round on Sundays. A local scuba diving club takes place in the Spring Term.
Charities Week: Activities are organised by the pupils including a termly non-uniform day in order to raise money for local and national charities.
The 6th Form Societies Amnesty and Envision: They raise money and awareness for charitable activities throughout the academic year.
The London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham: Members of the Senior Management Team formally meet the Officers from the Children's Services Department to discuss our participation in local education policy. The Assistant Head (Co-curricular) attends meetings of the Officers and Councillors with other Heads from maintained secondary schools to advise on the drawing up and implementing of strategy for the borough schools.
Police Ward Panel
This body has been set up by the Police for the Ward area in which Latymer is situated. Its membership includes chairs of local residents associations, representatives of local businesses, churches and other organsations. It meets at Latymer every six weeks. The Assistant Head (Co-curricular) sits on the panel.
