COMMUNITY LINKS

& CHARITY FUNDRAISING

Latymer Upper School works closely with the local community, and in particular with the Education Department of the Borough.  The school is heavily involved with education projects involving state secondary and local primary schools, and with the wider Hammersmith community. 

The Assistant Head with responsibility for community links and partnership schools also chairs regular meetings of the local residents association and maintains excellent relations with the local police.  All facilities and teaching are offered without charge.

Performing Arts

Centre for Young Musicians run by LBHF
The local borough uses LUS facilities in the Latymer Arts Centre every Saturday during term time and on two evenings during the week provided for pupils of borough state schools.

  • Saturday Music begins in September and runs from 9:30am - 2:00 pm
  • There is an annual concert in the Edward Latymer Theatre
  • The Children's Orchestra, Youth Choir and Youth Orchestra all meet at LUS.

Dance
LUS's annual Dance Show involves pupils from schools in the Borough and takes place in April in the Latymer Arts Centre & Music School. 

Art
Latymer is one of many venues in the LBHF for the Young at Art Exhibition of local young artists.

  • Exhibition open to the public in February.
  • Housed in the Atrium Galleries of the Latymer Arts Centre.

Sport

  • 3 local primary schools use the school's swimming pool every week during term time. A local swimming club also uses the pool two evenings every week.
  • A local badminton club uses the Sports Hall every week.
  • Chiswick & Latymer Cricket Club as well as Middlesex County Cricket Association use the cricket nets in season.
  • Latymerians play for Hammersmith and Fulham teams, competing in Inter-Borough competitions and London Youth Games
  • Latymer pupils play in Hammersmith and Fulham teams at U12, U13 and U14 levels, in rugby, football and cricket
  • Major involvement in cross-country and rowing
  • Annual hosting of basketball tournament for the Borough in the Sports Hall.
  • A local Scuba diving club takes place in the Spring Term.

Saturday School

  • Scheme run jointly with St Paul's Boys School since 1996.
  • Offers extension learning activities to local 10 year olds at state primary schools.
  • Pupils nominated by their primary Headteachers.
  • Extension activities and lessons in range of subjects .
  • Staffed by teachers and LUS 6th form classroom assistants.

Newly Qualified Teachers from Latymer Upper join the Borough's Induction programme along with teachers from:

  • Sacred Heart High School
  • Burlington Dane's School
  • William Morris Academy
  • Henry Compton School
  • Cambridge House
  • Phoenix High School
  • Latymer hosts training and development sessions and delivers NQT training each year
  • Latymer hosts training for King's College London PGCE courses
  • PGCE students from King's and from the Institute of Education join Latymer each year for teaching practice

Community Service

  • Latymer Sixth Form and year 11 pupils help in local primaries, schools for the disabled, and old peoples' homes
  • They also work with groups helping homeless and ethnic minority disabled
  • Younger pupils, led by Sixth Formers, host the annual OAPS Christmas Dinner where 130 local pensioners are entertained in school.
  • Charities Week each term raises substantial amounts money for local as well as national charities.

16+ Independent/State School Study Partnership

  • Joint scheme with St Paul's Girls, William Morris Academy and The Lady Margaret School.
  • Funded by DFES
  • Joint study in groups on a variety of projects, leading to presentation sessions.
  • Higher Education advice, with trip to Oxford or Cambridge.
  • Careers Conference and lectures/seminars on subjects such as Law and Psychology.
  • Benefits students' personal, social and communication skills.

Greenhouse Project

  • Drama workshops for local underprivileged 11- 18 years olds
    housed in the Edward Latymer Theatre in August.
  • Funding from the John Thaw Foundation.

Charity Fundraising

The School has an active programme of fund-raising for charity, with a dedicated Charities Week held in the Spring term.  All sorts of events are organised for this week, ranging from the "Talentless Idol" contest to "Blind Date" with both staff and pupils up for selection.

Non uniform days, sales of doughnuts and the annual Red Nose Day are all regular features of Charities Week.  The Charities Committee, which is made up of students, choose the charities to be supported.
