Music Tech Workshop 2017

THE SCIENCE BEHIND MUSIC AND MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS

We think that musical instruments are objects for artistic creation; however, they are also the product of sophisticated physics, maths and technology.

This dynamic workshop will reveal the science behind the design and making of musical instruments, acoustic and electronic.

WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT?

We will take you through a series of design & make projects that will enable you to plan, construct and play your very own musical instrument.

After designing your own acoustic instrument, you will learn how synthesisers and speakers work and make your very own. This will give you an understanding of the relationship between maths, science and their importance in the production of musical instruments and devices.

You do not need to know how to play an instrument to participate in this workshop

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

  • Learn about sound and how it is produced.
  • How size, shape and materials affect sounds.
  • Study the frequency and amplitude of sound waves, and how this relates to the pitch of a note.
  • Improve your maths skills by learning different formulae to calculate tuning systems.
  • Amplify and alter the sound of your instruments, using a variety of acoustic and electronic devices.
  • Learn about sound synthesis and sampling by building a synthesiser.
  • Learn how speakers work by building one based on your own design.
  • Develop your problem solving and lateral thinking skills.
